Project REACH

On any given day, there are as many as 7.3 million children with at least one parent in jail or prison, on probation or parole.  Studies show that out of those 7.3 million kids, 70% are likely to wind up in prison themselves, without intervention.  Texas has the second-HIGHEST incarceration rate in the NATION.  An estimated 106,000 Texas children have one or both parents in state prisons alone.  According to researchers at the Child Welfare League, 1 in 5 children of incarcerated parents witness their mother‘s arrest. Those who don‘t witness the arrest will reconstruct it in their minds.  Also, studies have shown that even a modest 10% - 15% reduction in risky behaviors can produce a significant improvement in quality of life, public safety and millions of dollars saved annually for taxpayers.

Given these startling realities, and the debilitating effects they impose on inner-city children in Houston (Harris County) and Westwood community, Ambassadors for Christ Youth Ministries successfully and currently conducts early intervention and prevention service through community-based mentoring relationships to high-risk youth, who have an incarcerated parent(s).  These high-risk youth, ages 4 through 18, are paired with adult volunteers who are thoroughly screened and trained to foster group, friendship-oriented (non-curriculum-based) mentoring relationships.  AFC provides effective recruitment and training of mentors, appropriate group matching of mentors and mentees and, ongoing support of mentors. The AFC-REACH Project is designed to ensure that it provides:

v  Young people with safe and trusting relationships

v  Healthy messages about life and social behavior

v  Appropriate guidance from a positive adult role models

v  Opportunities for increased participation in education, civic service, and community activities
